I may be wrong but there appear to be more than enough companies that have the name Cambridge in their titles. Obviously it carries more cachet than, say, Rotherham or Barnsley. That apart, one such company, Cambridge Microcomputers, have just appointed GTI Business Systems of Salisbury as a value-added reseller (VAR) for their recently launched Vitesse Property System (VPS), as well as their full range of super-microcomputers.
You may be asking: “When does a micro become a super-micro?” Unfortunately, there is no easy answer as the computer industry does not use a specific set of criteria. However, it is possible to highlight the extremes. Single-user personal computers, such as the IBM PS2 Model 30, are certainly not super-micros. At the other extreme, machines which provide multi-user, multi-tasking facilities could be so classified. Cambridge Microcomputer’s hardware falls into this latter category. It is based on the Motorolla 68030 chip, will support UNIX and can handle up to 48 users.
GTI Business Systems believe that VPS will give them a strong start in the property market. Chris Day, GTI’s group managing director, states that: “Unlike any other system aimed at estate agents and property developers, the VPS is based on industry standard hardware (the VME bus) and an industry standard operating system (UNIX). With these advantages plus Cambridge Micro’s unique imaging system, which allows text, graphics, maps and photographs to be merged and printed on a single page, we believe the VPS is superior to any potential competitor.”
