A redevelopment plan has been published for the former Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield, to be named the Olympic Legacy Park.
The park will feature a major research facility, a new 2,500-seat stadium for rugby league club Sheffield Eagles and a 50-bedroom hotel, as well as a school facilities developed in partnership with Sheffield’s second university technical college.
The research centre will focus on advanced wellbeing, linked to medical, physical activity, sports and leisure.
Developed in a joint venture between Sheffield Hallam University, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and Sheffield city council, it has attracted around £40m of private sector investment.
£10m is being sought from the regional growth fund.
Sheffield chamber of commerce executive director Richard Wright said: “The commercial opportunities around the whole wellness agenda and its associated technology are possibly one of the biggest opportunities Sheffield has seen for years.
“The chamber cannot think of a more fitting use for the site of the Don Valley Stadium.”
