Southwark plans more towers

Southwark council is to extend its tall building policy to several new parts of the borough.

Among the locations deemed suitable for towers is the Old Kent Road, SE1.

Earlier plans to build a high-rise residential scheme in the locality were turned down, with the council stating that the planned development “failed to make a positive contribution to the local townscape”.

But London mayor Boris Johnson took over the scheme and approved it, later identifying Old Kent Road as an “opportunity area”.

Funds raised by developments on the Old Kent Road are expected to contribute to the Bakerloo Line extension.

Southwark’s policy shift would permit tall buildings to be built in all parts of the borough that fall within London’s Central Activities Zone.
