Liverpool has been ranked as the second-most cited city in social media and online news mentions, while London remains top dog.
The capital accounted for 54.5% of online mentions across the UK’s top 20 cities, according to built environment consultancy ING Media’s UK Cities Digital League.
However, Liverpool is ranked as second with 8.7% of online mentions, beating Manchester (8.1%) and Birmingham (3.8%).
The report, which takes global city indices and reorders them by their share of online conversation, also shows that in terms of online mentions per person, Liverpool tops this list with more than 35 online mentions per person per year.
Oxford is ranked second with more than 32 mentions per person, and Cambridge third with more than 28.
ING Media managing director Leanne Tritton said: “UK cities are investing heavily into building brands that reflect their attractiveness as cultural, business and education centres.
“Measuring their digital visibility provides a clearer insight into how these cities and towns perform as brands compared to their peers. London dominates but, surprisingly, Liverpool punches well above its weight, coming second overall and topping the table when weighted for population.”
