South Western rail strike to cost economy £400m

The longest strike in the history of the railway started today, causing chaos to businesses.

Around 850 trains a day will be cancelled by the strike, or 46% of South Western Railway’s timetable.

The Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) is taking action for 27 days in December as part of a bitter dispute over the role of guards on a new generation of trains.

Last week economists warned that the action could cause businesses in the capital up to £400m as journeys to London Waterloo hit the buffers.
