Celebrity chef’s restaurant on the menu at Allsop sale

The east London restaurant run by celebrity chef Cyrus Todiwala and the former home of non-league football club Aylesbury United are some of the lots set to go under the hammer at Allsop’s December residential auction.

Café Spice Namasté, the restaurant for which Todiwala is best known, occupies the ground floor of a Grade II listed former magistrates office in Whitechapel, E1, which has also been converted into flats and is to be offered for sale at Allsop’s final residential auction of the year with a guide price of £5m.

Extending across four floors, the auction house says that the 8,772 sq ft building has a rear garden and potential for change of use.

Todiwala, who opened Café Spice Namasté in 1995, regularly appears on BBC 1’s Saturday Kitchen and Channel 4’s Drop Down Menu. In 2012, he cooked for the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

The building is one of 225 lots due to go under the hammer at Allsop’s final residential sale of the year on 17 December.

Also up for sale will be the 6.3 acre former home of Aylesbury United in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, which is being marketed with a guide price of £500,000.

Non-league Aylesbury United were evicted from their Buckingham Road stadium in 2006, forcing the club to ground-share with neighbouring teams in Chesham and Thame.

Since then the site has remained vacant, despite previous owners wanting to turn it into housing and a care home, and the football club attempting to return.

The site, which includes a clubhouse and car park, received planning consent for demolition in 2017 and, according to Allsop, offers “potential redevelopment opportunities for a variety of residential of retail uses”.

“The market has been challenging all year with the ongoing saga of Brexit and the looming general election causing uncertainty and affecting market confidence,” said Richard Adamson, partner and auctioneer at Allsop. “However, there is still strong demand from buyers for well-priced, good-quality assets.”

The auction will take place on 17 December at The InterContinental London Park Lane, W1.
