Annabel snubbed as rival club gets thumbs up

Annabel’s nightclub may be exclusive, but it can’t have exclusive rights to Berkeley Square.

A judge has ruled that there is no reason a rival club could not open next door to the Mayfair nightspot, dismissing Annabel’s claims that it would ‘Soho-ise’ the area.

In 2004 a company owned by Simon Halabi’s family trust, Berkeley Square Investments, bought a long lease on 45 Berkeley Square for more than £5m, next door to where Annabel’s moved to last year.

Berkeley Square Investments was granted planning permission for a new club in 2016, but Berkeley Square Holding objected to the decision, saying it would make the area ‘synonymous’ with nightlife.

Judge Stuart Bridge has dismissed the objection and granted the conversion to a private members club.
