Landowner gifts Roman fort to nation

The site of a Roman fort in Northumberland has become the first gift of land to English Heritage since it became a charity five years ago.

Ownership of Carrawburgh Roman Fort has been passed to Historic England, which has in turn handed it to English Heritage.

The site represents a key part of the story of Rome’s defence against the terrors beyond its northern frontier and has been largely unexplored by archaeologists.

The 1,900-year-old ruin, which largely lies beneath the turf alongside Hadrian’s Wall, had been owned by the family of Jennifer Du Cane since the 1950’s, but the landowner has said that “the time has come to pass on this amazing site as a gift to the nation”.
