Christmas sales at Sainsbury’s were dragged down by a slump in demand for toys and games at its Argos stores.
The supermarket chain reported a 0.7% fall in total like-for-like sales for the 15 weeks to January 4, although analysts predict that this could be the healthiest result from the “Big Four”.
Grocery sales rose by 0.4%, and online sales surged by 7.3%, but were pulled back by your performance by Argos, where sales of toys fell by 10% and video games by 35%.
Sainsbury’s has 600 supermarkets – 289 with Argos outlets – 800 convenience stores and 600 standalone Argos stores. It bought Argos in 2016.
