House prices given post-election boost

The housing market benefited from a post-election bounce as prices rose at their fastest monthly rate for more than a decade.

Figures from Halifax show price growth hitting 1.2% in December, the largest rise since February 2007.

However economists have cautioned that the Halifax index was likely to be overestimating the bounce, as Nationwide put monthly growth at just 0.1%.
