Political uncertainty dampened mortgage demand

Demand for mortgages fell in the final quarter of last year as political uncertainty put the breaks on movers.

The Bank of England’s quarterly credit conditions survey found that a balance of –12.7 of lenders reported a rise in the demand for mortgages, down from +12.5% the previous quarter.

Economists said that demand was likely to pick up now that buyers had a clearer idea about what the immediate future holds.
