Kensington mansion hits the market with £10m price tag

A six-bedroom mansion in Kensington that was previously an air-raid store and a wedding venue is being marketed for sale with a price tag of £10m.

The owner, a private overseas investor, has appointed Harrods Estates, the real estate arm of the luxury department store group to market the property.

Cheniston Lodge in Cheniston Gardens, W8, is a 5,000 sq ft four-storey building that was built in 1885. It is Grade II listed and was used as a house until the Second World War. It was acquired by the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and was used as a register office between the end of the war and the 1980s.

It was then sold and modernised for office use before being converted back to residential use by developer Adiva in 2008.

Shaun Drummond, sales director at Harrods Estates, said: “Cheniston Gardens has a fascinating history and a unique facade rarely seen on the market.”

The listing comes amid an uptick of luxury home sales in the capital. According to LonRes, the number of sales of mansions priced over £5m soared by 78% at the end of 2019, compared to a year earlier.

LonRes said agents welcomed increased buyer confidence buoying the market following the Conservative re-election. It predicted further increases, with a rush of deals anticipated in advance of potential stamp duty hikes targeting foreign investors.
