The number of planning applications for subterranean gun stores, Turkish baths, walk-in humidors and, of course, swimming pools in Westminster fell by 27% last year, from 136 to 99.

Applicants are said to have been put off by high-profile rows about underground building works, such as the feud between Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page and Take That’s Robbie Williams.
