Stadium and 10,000 homes planned for flood areas

Almost 10,000 homes and a football stadium are among the planned developments for some of the UK’s most flood-prone areas.

A study by Greenpeace found that 9,688 new homes had received planning permission in areas considered at high risk of flooding.

The majority are located in the East Midlands, with Boston Council responsible for permissions for 4,635 at-risk new homes and Boston United FC’s new 5,000-seat stadium.

While the Environment Agency determines which parts of the country are at greatest risk from flooding, it is up to individual councils to heed the advice or not.

Sir John Armitt, chair of the National Infrastructure Commission, said yesterday that building should not be permitted on flood plains unless the developer also builds flood prevention measures.
