Two Liverpool hotels waved through planning

Two Liverpool hotels have been given the green light at Liverpool City Council’s latest planning committee.

Velocity GB’s plans to build a 150-bed, five-storey hotel have been given the go-ahead by council planners.

The scheme, located six miles from Liverpool city centre next to Dobbies Garden Centre, also includes a 150-space car park and a ground floor restaurant.

Plans for a new six-storey hotel have also been given the nod at the committee.

The site, located within the city’s world heritage buffer zone on the corner of Sandhills Land and Regent Road, will see the current owner of the two-storey Atlantic Corner Hotel demolish the old building to make room for a new 50-bed hotel under the same name.

A council heritage specialist raised concerns over the original proposal for a glass and steel 12-storey, 100-bed hotel, specifically concerning the height of the hotel and the impact it could have on the city’s world heritage site.

Although Historic England raised no formal objections, it did say it was “regrettable” that the original hotel would be demolished.

As a result, plans were amended to reduce the height of the building and include brickwork in the scheme.
