London mansions seized in McMafia probe

A mansion on London’s “billionaire’s row” has been seized by the National Crime Agency.

The Hampstead residence of Nurali Aliyev, the grandson of Nursultan Nazarbayev, the former Kazakh president, is one of three homes worth a total of £80m seized under unexplained wealth orders obtained at the High Court.

The orders are known as McMafia orders after the book by Misha Glenny that exposed the corruption.

The £30m mansion on Bishops Avenue, Hampstead, has an underground pool, a private cinema.

The other properties are a £31m apartment in Chelsea and a mansion near Highgate Golf Club worth £20m.

The agency secured the orders last May over suspicions that the properties were bought using proceeds of crime provided by Mr Aliyev’s father.

The late Rakhat Aliyev was a former senior official in the Kazakhstan government and was accused of killing two bankers.
