Hines plans in for 1,200-bed student scheme in Birmingham

A joint venture between Hines and Henderson Park has submitted plans for a 1,191-bedroom student scheme in Selly Oak, Birmingham.

The 400,000 sq ft scheme will also incorporate study spaces, a canteen, a laundrette, games room, cycle hub and a gym, with commercial space on the ground floor.

Development at what has been dubbed the Triangle Site will replace the former Sainsbury’s supermarket, which has been vacant since November 2018.

The 3.3-acre site is 4km to the south-west of Birmingham city centre on a parcel of land bound by Chapel Road, Bristol Road (A38) and Halborne Lane (A4040 outer ring road).

It comprises buildings of between four and 16 storeys, with a mixture of cluster and studio bedrooms, and will be operated by Hines’ student platform Aparto.

The scheme has been designed by AHMM Architects with planning advice from Turley.

The jv is in discussions with the University of Birmingham over a nomination agreement and the scheme will also cater to Aston and Birmingham City students.

Hines and Henderson Park joined forces in 2017 to pursue value-added investments in the European student accommodation sector. The duo’s first project was the 630-bed scheme in Lancaster which completed in 2019.
