WELL Building Insitute launches infectious disease task force

The International WELL Building Institute is setting up a task force to understand the role buildings, along with organisations and communities, can play in preventing infections in the wake of the outbreak of Covid-19.

It will aim to identify and develop guidelines and create resources to enable individuals, organisations and communities to manage their buildings better, and look into ways the WELL Building Standard can be further strengthened to help support the prevention, preparedness, resiliency and recovery for such moments in the future.

The task force will be co-chaired by the former president and chief executive of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, former director and health officer of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Jonathan Fielding, former surgeon general of the United States Richard Carmona, and assistant professor and director of the healthy buildings program at Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health Joseph Allen.

“IWBI’s work centres on providing evidence-backed solutions that advance better health and wellbeing in the places and spaces where we spend our lives,” Rick Fedrizzi, IWBI chairman and chief executive, said.

“The creation of this task force provides a mechanism to focus on this immediate challenge and collect and apply the expertise and insight of our global community, which includes practicing physicians, environmental and behavioral scientists, leading design practitioners and innovation leaders from global corporations.”
