Empty supermarket shelves show flaws in “just in time” system

Supermarket shortages are revealing the fundamental flaws of a “just in time” supply chain.

While the government has repeatedly assured the public that there is plenty of food and supplies to go around, supermarket distribution centres no longer hold vast amounts of stock.

Just one or two weeks’ worth of long-life products and a few days supply of perishable goods are held in depots.
