Market wrap: Estate agencies drop as housing market freezes

Red across the board today, as the FTSE 100 posted a 5.45% fall, the FTSE 250 dropped by 4.1% and the FTSE 350 by 5.25%.

Several estate agencies fell on news that the housing market is essentially being put on hold. Countrywide dropped by 10%, Foxtons by 4.4% and Purplebricks by almost 8%.

U+I dropped by 11% to close at 76.3p. The company today said it had sold three UK retail assets for a combined £22.4m, below their book value. Last week the company said it would now fail to meet even the lower end of its results guidance.

In a falling market, intu Properties made a rare appearance as the session’s biggest riser, posting a gain of almost a fifth and closing at 4.5p, nonetheless still close to its record low.
