Avison Young’s business rates chief retires

Tony Baldwin, managing director of business rates at Avison Young, has retired after 30 years at the firm.

He has been replaced by principal David Jones in the role, which takes effect today. Jones previously led the business rates team in London, and sits on the CBI rating and valuation panel.

Jones has been credited with expanding Avison Young’s central London offer into the serviced office sector, and growing the team’s hotel business rates instructions to more than 600 hotels nationally.

After joining legacy GVA in 1989, Baldwin was elected as partner in 1992. He oversaw the Northern rating team before becoming national head of rating in 2005, and divisional head of the lease and rating consultancy division in 2008.

Baldwin also held roles on GVA’s board and in its remuneration committee for a number of years.

Jason Sibthorpe, principal and president UK at Avison Young, said: “I’d like to thank Tony wholeheartedly for his hard work and dedication as MD for business rates and more importantly for simply being a great colleague.”

He added: “My congratulations go to David, who I know will bring tremendous drive and ambition to the position and will navigate a strong business rates team in these uncertain times alongside his fellow principals.”
