Solihull approves Resorts World Arena expansion

Solihull Council has approved plans for the UK’s second-largest arena at Resorts World Arena.

Development will boost the entertainment venue from a capacity of 15,600 people to 21,600, eclipsing the current levels O2 London and Manchester Arena.

Owner NEC Group had envisaged the arena would be the largest in the UK. However, it will be exceeded by plans for a major revamp of Manchester Arena which will see it boosted to a 24,500-capacity destination venue.

The current facility in Solihull already hosts the NEC, the Bear Grylls Adventure Centre and Resorts World. The £45m proposed redevelopment will deliver a new upper-level concourse, lounge and hospitality facilities and a new energy-efficient exterior.

Resorts World Arena is expected to be completed prior to the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2020 and will act as a venue during the games. Construction is due to begin this year with a completion target of May 2022.
