Every English river fails pollution test

All of England’s rivers and lakes have failed tests for chemical pollution.

Raw sewage spilling from thousands of storm overflows and run off of fertiliser and manure from farmland have led to English reviews being among the worst in Europe.

Just 16% meet the government’s criteria for good ecological status “or potential”, which is unchanged since 2016. No water body achieved “good chemical status”.

In Scotland 66% are deemed healthy.
