Manchester backs huge co-living push

Manchester City Council has approved two mega co-living schemes, which will see over 3,000 co-living bedrooms built across the city.

Downing Developments’ 2,224-bedroom scheme at First Street, the largest co-living development in the UK, was finally given the green light after being pushed back earlier this year.

The council’s planning committee said in July that a site visit was needed before making a decision on whether to approve the plans.

The plans include towers of up to 45 storeys high and 56,000 sq ft of public realm space, co-working space, communal lounge and kitchen space, and a cinema will be built.

The second co-living scheme to be waived through was Vita Group’s 32-storey tower scheme in Water Street, consent for which was delayed two months ago over concerns about the size of the apartments and lack of parking space for disabled people.

The scheme will see 870 bedrooms delivered, compromising 390 co-living apartments.
