Barbican office scheme recommended for approval

The City of London Corporation has recommended planning consent be given to the redevelopment of 1-12 Long Lane, EC1, next to Barbican underground station.

The plans from GMS Estates, MacTaggart Third Fund and the Ian MacTaggart Trust would demolish three buildings each six storeys tall and replace them with one seven-storey building.

The new building would provide 86,854 sq ft of office space and 7,868 sq ft of retail space.

The scheme, which is near to Smithfield Market, received 71 objections, including the Barbican Association owing to concerns about the massing, height, loss of light and overlooking.

In recommending the scheme the City’s planners said the scheme “would provide active frontages in a prominent location next to public transport links within the Culture Mile”.
