New Yorkers have taken advantage of a ban on evictions to avoid paying rent on luxury homes.
Landlords and estate agents in some of the wealthiest enclaves of Long Island have complained of unscrupulous tenants moving into expensive beach houses and then refusing to pay rent or move out.
The ban on evictions was introduced earlier this year by New York governor Andrew Cuomo.
Among the hold-outs is a property developer and former nightclub owner who was said to have told his landlords: “I don’t have to leave because the governor said so.”
