Villagers revolt against castle’s homes plan

Villagers in Co Durham are revolting against plans by the the lord of the manor to build scores of new homes to fund repair works.

Raby Estates, which comprises landholdings and trade operations owned by Henry Francis Cecil Vane, the 12th Lord Barnard, has been granted permission to build 151 houses across two villages to fund works on Raby Castle.

The project could raise £3m, but the residents of Gainford and Staindrop are up in arms.
