The University of Oxford and Legal & General have gained planning consent for the university’s £200m Life and Mind Building.
The building, designed by architect practice NBBJ, will house the university’s departments of experimental psychology and biology, including plant sciences and zoology.
The centre will have a gross internal area of 269,097 sq ft and provide research facilities to 800 students and 1,200 researchers.
Legal & General is financing and developing the project, which is the first scheme for the duo’s £4bn Oxford University Development partnership.
Works will begin in the summer, undertaken by developer Wates Group. The centre, which replaces the Tinbergen Building, is expected to open in 2024.
Anna Strongman, chief executive of Oxford University Development, said the project will “help retain talent in the city” in the wake of Covid-19, while “driving essential inward investment and providing opportunities for world-leading innovation”.
L&G partnered with the university in 2019 to provide new homes for staff and students, as well as innovation facilities.
Savills is Oxford University’s planning adviser on the proposals.
