Market wrap: Resi rises as housebuilders recover

Barratt Developments and Taylor Wimpey were among the best performing stocks in the FTSE 100 today, as housebuilders stage a subdued recovery from falls last week.

Listed housebuilders saw their shares drop after housing secretary Robert Jenrick confirmed a levy on residential profit from 2022 to help pay for cladding remediation.

Today, a 0.9% rise for Barratt stock and a 0.6% lift for Taylor Wimpey left both in the eight sharpest risers across the FTSE 100 – although neither stock has recovered past its level from 9 February, the day before the levy was announced.

In the FTSE 250, the most notable property-related share price rise was seen by Sirius Real Estate, which gained 1.7% at 93.3p.

The session’s most sizeable real estate fall came from Hammerson, down by 5.5% at 20.7p.

The FTSE 100 closed at 6,617, down by 1.4%, while the FTSE 250 stood at 20,933, down 1%.
