Deadline looms on £200m Moorfields Eye Hospital site

The NHS trust which runs Moorfields Eye Hospital is hoping to rake in more than £200m from a potential sale of its 122-year-old HQ, with days left for investors to register interest.

The deadline for registrations is 26 February for the historic 2.5-acre island site near Old Street, EC1, which the Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology are looking to offload.

Marketing remains in the early stages, but EG understands it is expected that eventual offers will top £200m for the hospital and its grounds, which are being presented as a campus-style development opportunity. The proceeds of any sale will go towards funding a new centre for eye care at St Pancras Hospital.

The NHS trust has been considering a relocation for a number of years, with proposals first mooted in 2013. Any deal would be subject to gaining planning permission from Islington Council.

Interest is already thought to be strong in the site, with dozens of investors having lined up to register.

Bordered by City Road in Islington, the hospital has stood on its current premises since 1899. Together with the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, which would be included in any deal, it is the oldest and largest centre for eye treatment in Europe.

Once parties have registered their interest, CBRE will kick off a formal marketing process in the spring.
