Resi tenants evicted despite Jenrick promise

Residential tenants are being evicted by landlords despite Robert Jenrick’s pledge that this would not happen.

The housing secretary said that “no renter who has lost income due to coronavirus will be forced out of their home”.

However, the recent extension of the moratorium on evictions quietly dropped a clause that stated that tenants could only be evicted if they had built up nine months of rental arrears prior to the pandemic.

Tenants now face eviction if they have accrued six months of arrears, even if those were during the pandemic.

Acorn, the national community union that focuses on renters’ rights said the change “makes a mockery of Robert Jenrick’s promise that no one would lose their homes due to Covid”.
