Market wrap: Housebuilders rise on Budget hopes

With hopes high that this week’s Budget will include a boost for the housing market, housebuilders made up four of the eight top risers in the FTSE 100 today.

Taylor Wimpey finished the day up by 5.7% at 166.55p, the sharpest rise of any FTSE 100 stock other than International Consolidated Airlines.

Persimmon rose by 5.4%, Berkeley Group by 5.2% and Barratt Developments by 5.06%.

In the FTSE 250 there were table-topping gains for Bellway – up by 6.3%, more than any stock in the index, at 2,997p – as well as Crest Nicholson, up by 6.4%.

The FTSE 100 closed up by 1.6% at 6,588, while the FTSE 250 closed up by 1.5% at 21,221.
