Developer unveils 53-storey Birmingham scheme

Woodbourne Group has announced plans for a £360m mixed-use development Birmingham with the city’s tallest tower, rising to 53 storeys.

Curzon Wharf will include 1,495 homes with build-to-rent, student accommodation, co-living, office space and R&D close to Birmingham’s High Speed 2 station.

The scheme comprises 993,046 sq ft of development. The 53-storey tower will be 172m tall, with 498 BTR flats. A 41-storey building will provide a further 732 student bedrooms, with a 14-storey co-living building of 265 homes.

There will be 130,000 sq ft of offices and 15,000 sq ft of leisure and public realm. It will be a net zero carbon development.

The 2.5-acre site currently holds a vacant 1960s industrial scheme. It is located close to Dartmouth Circus, just off the A38 Aston Expressway coming into the city. Woodbourne purchased the land in 2019 for £5.5m from a fund managed by Downing.

Tani Dulay, chief executive at Woodbourne Group, said: “Curzon Wharf isn’t just a development, it’s a manifesto that will position Birmingham as the UK’s leading smart and sustainable city, helping to pave the way for the green revolution.

“It will act as a catalyst for the wider transformation of the Eastside area, where a number of masterplans have been earmarked which otherwise would not be possible.”

West Midlands mayor Andy Street said the scheme is likely to create 1,000 jobs, building on the city’s life sciences proposition at Selly Oak, at “a critical time for our region’s economy as we recover from the coronavirus pandemic”.

A public consultation will run from 12-26 March ahead of a hybrid planning application submission.

Turley and CBRE are advising Woodbourne.
