Eye hospital to form focal point of Sunderland vision

The South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust has unveiled plans to build an iconic new eye hospital in the centre of Sunderland as part of the city’s Riverside Sunderland masterplan.

The new hospital will replace current facilities in the south-east of the city that are no longer fit for purpose.

Funding for the £36m development, which will sit next to Sunderland’s new city hall – The Beam – has been provided by the council.

Riverside Sunderland is a circa 80-acre site in the heart of the city, regenerating the former Vaux brewery site that will ultimately deliver 1,000 homes and 1m sq ft of office space, plus hotels, arts space and public sector buildings.

Sunderland City Council leader Graeme Miller said: “We are delighted to work with the Trust on this exciting development for the city and help deliver a new world-class facility for Sunderland Eye Infirmary as part of our Riverside Sunderland plans. We look forward to working with the NHS in the weeks and months ahead as plans progress.”
