£250m Southampton leisure park revamp gets green light

A proposed £250m revamp of a retail and leisure complex in Southampton has been given the green light by local authorities, paving the way for a new cinema, hotels and 650 homes near the city’s waterfront.

Developer Sovereign Centros plans to redevelop the existing Leisure World site, which was built 24 years ago near the Berth 101 cruise terminal.

The project, touted as “one of the most significant redevelopments Southampton has seen in a long time”, will also include a new casino, offices, a reworked public realm and leisure and wellbeing facilities. Construction is due to begin in 2022.

The scheme is part of a long-term makeover planned for Southampton’s 84ha Mayflower Quarter.

John Marsh, director at Sovereign Centros, said: “There has never been a more important time to bring forward investment in our regional cities.

“Our plans seek to rejuvenate this strategic site by creating a mixed-use city centre destination that delivers one of the most significant redevelopments Southampton has seen in a long time.

“It will also help to ensure that the city can emerge in a strong post-pandemic position and, in time, act as a catalyst for the wider regeneration of the Mayflower Quarter.”
