Pubs pour scorn on passport plan

Pubs have poured scorn on proposals to allow people to enter pubs if they have a Covid vaccination passport.

Boris Johnson insisted that “no decision” had been taken as landlords, hospitality bosses and politicians united to condemn the “unworkable”, “absurd” and “unfair” plans.

On Wednesday the prime minister said “it may be up to the landlord” to decide whether to bar unvaccinated people when they are permitted to serve inside from the middle of May.

But hospitality bosses pointed out that the majority of staff are under 25 and are not likely to be vaccinated until July. Fiona Hornsby, who runs two pubs in Liverpool, said: “Can they not come to work?”

Jonathan Neame, chief executive of the Shepherd Neame group, said: “Imagine a scene where a family is reconnecting for the first time after this crisis, where Grandpa’s forgotten his vaccination certificate, Mum is pregnant and the kids are too young to have had it yet. Who’s going to make the judgment on the door?”
