A 10.4-acre Tesco site in north east London is set to be transformed into a £500m mixed-use urban village scheme.
Weston Homes and Tesco have received a resolution to grant planning permission from the London Borough of Redbridge to develop their Lorimer Village project on the site of a Tesco store and carpark site at 822 High Road in Goodmayes.
The new development will comprise 1,280 new homes of mixed tenure across 14 towers ranging from 10 to 22 storeys, as well as a replacement Tesco store, more than 18,000 sq ft of commercial space, a primary school, village hall, landscaped gardens and public transport improvements. Work is expected to begin in early 2022 and to take eight years.
Weston Homes chief executive Bob Weston said of the project: “There is an urgent need to provide more low-cost housing for Londoners so collaborations like this between major retailers and housebuilders makes an important contribution.”
The scheme has attracted significant criticism from local residents over its density, design and impacts on the area. An objection petition attracted more than 2,800 signatures with an additional 230 letters of objection submitted.
Section 106 details are yet to be finalised and the approval is subject to direction by the mayor or secretary of state.
