John Lewis appoints ‘store of the future’ director

John Lewis has appointed a new director of “store of the future”, as part of the retailer’s strategy to modernise its offer and bricks-and-mortar portfolio.

Lululemon real estate, store development and strategic sales director Stephen Spencer will take up the new role. He will join the retailer at the end of July.

John Lewis said Spencer will “play a critical role in the work we are doing to rebalance our store estate including where we open new, more local shops that reflect how our customers shop today – as well as ensuring that our existing shops continue to be inspiring places to visit”.

Spencer has more than 20 years’ experience in retail store development, innovation and creative customer experience. His previous roles include senior positions at Tiffany & Co, Apple and HMV.

The retailer has also hired Dunelm digital director Steve Masterson as its new director of online trade, and eBay brand marketing boss Rosie Hanley as its new head of brand and marketing.

Pippa Wicks, executive director for John Lewis, said: “They bring with them an enormous amount of talent and experience; and will all play critical, leadership roles in delivering our turnaround strategy as we invest to accelerate our online business, make our existing and future new format shops extraordinary destinations and modernise our brand.

“These appointments build on recent momentum in John Lewis, driven by the launch of our new Anyday range, which offers John Lewis quality and style at everyday prices, and the reopening of our Edinburgh shop after its three year refurbishment.”
