World’s deepest indoor pool planned for Cornwall

Plans for the world’s biggest and deepest indoor pool have been announced for Cornwall.

The £150m Blue Abyss will be an extraordinary 50m deep, as well as 50m by 40m wide, and will hold as much water as 17 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

The design is intended to be suitable for training astronauts and will be built on a 10-acre site at the Aerohub Enterprise Zone next to Cornwall Airport Newquay.

The pool will also have a retractable roof and cranes, so that mock ups of the International Space Station or film sets can be lowered in.

Blue Abyss is in negotiations with Cornwall council to acquire four adjacent plots on the Aerohub Business Park.
