Barnet blocks Douglas Bader Estate regen

Barnet Council has refused plans for the redevelopment of Douglas Bader Estate, despite resident support for the 753-home regeneration.

Home Group and Hill Residential had proposed a scheme of buildings of up to nine storeys, to replace the 271 flats built in the 1970s.

In May 2019, 91% of residents voted, with 75% in favour of the estate regeneration.

However, councillors at the planning committee on 1 June went against officer recommendations with a 7-4 vote to refuse the scheme.

Members criticised the level of social housing and said the excessively dense scheme would have a negative impact on the area.

The developers’ plans for Douglas Bader Estate included 40% affordable housing, comprising social rent and London affordable rent. The social rent has been offered to existing tenants.
