Lord Porter, the former chairman of the Local Government Association, has joined the board of the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.
Porter has been appointed non-executive director for three years.
The former bricklayer has been leader of South Holland District Council since 2003. He became vice-chair of the LGA in 2011 and was appointed chairman of the organisation in 2015. When the four-year role ended in 2019, he continued with the LGA as building safety spokesman.
In 2013, Porter was made a CBE for services to local government and in 2015 he was made Lord Porter of Spalding.
He is a non-executive director for Norfolk County Council-owned property consultancy Norse Group and chairman of cross-party think-tank the Effective Governance Forum.
Responding to Porter’s appointment, communities secretary Robert Jenrick, said: “His hands-on construction experience and advocacy for building safety will be a huge help to the department’s important work as we help the country recover and build back better from the pandemic.”
