Taxpayers to pay hotel bills for cash-strapped quarantiners

The taxpayer could end up paying the hotel bills of tens of thousands of people unable to pay the costs of quarantine.

While ministers are considering quarantine-free travel from amber-list countries from 19 July, a new subsidy scheme is being drawn up by the department of health following a legal challenge.

Visitors suffering financial hardship would have the £1,750 per person costs of their enforced hotel-based quarantine period paid for by the state.
