Italy pays for move to Piedmont

Italy is offering €10m (£8.5m) in grants to lure people to the northwestern region of Piedmont.

The regional government is making the cash available to people who either buy a building or repair one that they already own in a mountain community with a population lower than 5,000.

Grants of up to €40,000 will be available for those moving from an Italian city who are prepared to live in the area for at least 10 years.

The offer, which is available from November, applies to 465 small communities and to people aged up to 65, with a points-based system designed to favour the young and families with children.
