San Francisco tower still has sinking feeling despite $100m support

A luxury tower in San Francisco is still sinking, despite $100m being poured in to fix it.

The Millennium Tower, the tallest residential building in the Californian city, had sunk 18 inches by 2014 and was listing 14 inches to the west, earning it comparisons with the leaning tower of Pisa.

A confidential $100m settlement was reached with developers, Milennium Partners, to shore up the building, which was expected to ‘settle’ just 4-6 inches over its entire lifetime.

In May crews started work on a perimeter pile upgrade project to install 52 concrete, 140,000lb piles to anchor the building to the bedrock 250ft below ground.

Shortly after work began, however, the sinking and tilting accelerated. The 54-storey building now has a tilt of 22 inches.

Millennium Partners has suspended the work until it can better understand why the tower is leaning, but has assured residents that the building is safe.
