Mortgage lending rises as stamp holiday ends

Mortgage lending continues to rise as the stamp duty holiday ends.

Net mortgage lending increased by £5.3bn in August, recovering form a net payment “blip” of £1.8bn in July.

Mortgage approvals for house purchases edged down from 75,100 in July to 74,500 in August, the lowest since July 2020 but well above the pre-coronavirus average of 65,000 a month.

The average size of a mortgage approval increased from £251,000 in July to £267,000 in August.

As of today, the stamp duty threshold reverts to £125,000.
