Scannell makes senior hires for UK industrial expansion

US-based industrial and logistics developer Scannell Properties has made four senior appointments to its UK business, including hires from Kier Property and John Lewis Partnership.

Phil Sutton, previously part of Kier’s senior leadership team as head of trade and logistics, joins as UK managing director.

Former Kier colleague Darren Cheeseman, who was development director at the firm, will become UK development director at Scannell.

The developer has also recruited Simon Borthwick, formerly a property and development manager at John Lewis Partnership, where he worked for 10 years. At JLP, Borthwick oversaw the construction of the retail group’s new logistics network.

Gleave senior project and construction manager David Pither completes the quartet, joining as construction manager.

The UK team, which includes senior director Chris Davies and counsel Ben Cavender, will report to Scannell International managing director Nick Deeks.

The team aims to develop a mix of build-to-suit and speculative sustainable logistics and industrial properties across the UK.

Deeks said: “With Phil, Darren, Simon and David, we have brought together a team that has a huge amount of experience and knowledge of all aspects of logistics development, from land acquisition to design and construction.

“They know the sector intimately, and there are few out there who have such insight into what today’s occupiers need.”

Sutton added: “There is no denying that the UK logistics market is growing at an exponential rate, and with the impact of both Brexit and the Covid pandemic on the sector, the need for more high-tech and sustainable development has never been so pronounced.”
