Lamington Group prepares first net zero hotel in west London

Apartment hotel operator room2 is preparing to open what it claims will be the world’s first fully net zero carbon hotel.

The Lamington Group-backed brand, which set out its 2030 net zero carbon roadmap last month, says its upcoming hotel in Chiswick, west London, will be 89% more energy efficient than a typical hotel.

The building, set to open later this year, will be net zero throughout the design and construction phase and throughout its life, including embodied and operational emissions. Some of the net zero target will be achieved through carbon off-setting where emissions are unavoidable.

Robert Godwin, managing director at Lamington Group and room2, told EG the initiative reflects “a shift” in the Lamington Group’s 54-year company history as it “looks for the next 54 years”. “We have a long-term view and sustainability has to have a long-term horizon,” he added.

On-site renewables will allow the building to convert 100% of its energy needs for heating, cooling and hot water, while two ‘lab rooms’ will also provide the operator with data on energy, water use and air quality.

A ‘blue’ roof will be able to store 50,000 litres of rainwater, an initiative to minimise local flooding, and a ‘green’ roof will boost local biodiversity. Lamington Group has also set out a procurement strategy that means suppliers are selected in line with the company’s sustainability criteria.

Godwin said he wants the building to “set a new standard for true sustainable development in the global hotel industry”.
