Canary Wharf hires new sustainability director

Canary Wharf Group has hired Sophie Goddard as its new director of sustainability.

Goddard (pictured) joins from Balfour Beatty, where she was head of environment, sustainability and social value, with responsibility for both the regional and specialist businesses. She has more than 10 years’ experience in the built environment across a variety of sub-sectors and was a core contributor to Balfour Beatty’s updated group strategy.

The announcement comes as the developer and landlord published its 2021 Sustainability Report, which hails a halving of emissions since 2012.

Chief executive Shobi Khan said: “We are making good progress towards becoming net zero carbon by the end of this decade and are delighted to welcome Sophie to the team to help accelerate our progress. Since 1987 we have embedded sustainability into the heart of our developments, creating over 11m sq ft of sustainably certified buildings, and since 2012 have purchased all our energy from renewable sources and sent zero waste to landfill.”

He added that Goddard’s “detailed understanding of the built environment” will ensure that CWG continues to make “rapid progress” towards its goals.

Goddard praised Canary Wharf as “one of the most forward-thinking developers in Europe on climate change”.

She added that she would help CWG “cement its climate leadership” and would be “building on the innovative work the team has already done towards making sustainability real”.

CWG achieved five Green Stars for its 2020 ESG performance from GRESB.
