The first of two auctions to offload the art collection of New York real estate tycoon Harry Macklowe and his ex-wife Linda fetched $676m (£503m), putting the 65-piece trove on track to break the record for the most expensive art collection ever sold at auction.
Of the initial 35 pieces to sell, the most expensive was “No. 7” by Mark Rothko, which sold for $82.5m.
The second half of the collection will be auctioned in May.
The collection is being sold through Sotherby’s.
