Gove attacks Kingspan’s F1 sponsorship

Michael Gove has criticised the “deeply disappointing” sponsorship of Lewis Hamilton’s Formula One team by the firm that made the combustible insulation used on the Grenfell Tower.

Kingspan was named as a partner of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One team, for whom the seven-times world champion is the star driver. The company’s branding will be on Hamilton’s car at Sunday’s Saudi Arabia Grand Prix.

The decision was described as “truly shocking” by survivors of the fire, which killed 72 people in June 2017.

The secretary of state for levelling up, housing and communities, said he was “deeply disappointed” by the sponsorship.

In a tweet last night, Gove wrote: “I will be writing to Mercedes to ask them to reconsider. The Grenfell community deserves better.”
